I just installed slack 10 on my laptop with no problems, then went on to configure kernel 2.6.7. Once it's compiled and I reboot, I choose the image in lilo and get a blank screen. It seems like there are things going on in the background, but I can't see anything. Eventually I press ctrl-alt-del to make it restart, so it seems like the normal startup tasks are starting. Any ideas why this would happen?
Maybe you've set a bad vga mode at bootup. By default I believe it will use vga=773 for the framebuffering. Try changing this to vga=normal and run lilo to make the changes after editing the lilo.conf file. If it works, then you know you've probably left some support out for your particular video card, etc.
I tried with the vga=normal option, but I still get the blank screen. You mentioned that I could've left something w/ my video out.... what would that be?
Also, when I set vga=normal and try to boot the kernel, I see a flash of the normal startup text but then the screen goes blank. I don't know if this is useful, but just something I noticed.
Ok, well I finally got this thing working..... but I have to give credit to Azrael from efnet. It came down to some misc kernel config options that weren't set correctly having to do with vesafb, vgafb, and radeonfb all interfering. Long story short, set just vga and vesa framebuffer and options (ex: fonts). Anyone w/ kernel questions, check out Azrael on efnet.
