repair a damaged reiserfs

Hello

I have Mandrake 10 installed and on one faithful day it decided to do an ugly crash: It halts at boot time with the following message:

RAMDISK Couldn't find valid RAM disk image starting at 0
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on hda5

I booted Knoppix and tried to do a fsck.reiserfs on my linux partition /dev/hda5 but it says:

reiserfsck: could not open filesystem on /dev/hda5

However i can mount and read the partition from KNoppix and even from Windows

any ideas? i REALLY don't want to do a reinstall. That's the Windows way of fixing things :P

THank you very much.

How are you reading a reiserfs partition from Windows? You sure the partition is even a ReiserFS partition?

yes, there's a plugin for total commander to read reiserfs partitions, it's read-only however
