rename computer?

this might be ubuntu-specific, but might not.

the first thing my (ubuntu-)installer asked was what I like my system to be called. that's what's behind the @ in a terminal. so, I wonder whether I can rename my computer (after installation), and if more than 8-char names are alright, considering that I'll want to perform cross-platform communication.

google didn't help

any ideas?

alright, I also used the search option in the board, but it didn't give me these:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=280628
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ad.php?t=29568
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ad.php?t=92287

they basically say 'type: hostname NAME'

4 th mo, no further questions. sorry for annoyance.
btw, why did the search option only give me crap? also does the "check 4 similar thread titles" always give me the same 5 threads.

similar thread section rocks!

Why don't you search your /etc directory for the name (the pattern) your computer currently has? This way you will find, where it belongs in Ubuntu - each disto seems to do this a little different.
/etc/hostname ?
Here (Gentoo) it is in /etc/conf.d/hostname - which is a config-file for the init-scripts.
It is probably done similar in Ubuntu.

You can use the "hostname" command as root to change it. You will need to log out of KDE after changing the hostname. I don't know about gnome.
