Removing GRUB help!!!

Here is my problem.

I have a system with two hard drives. One hard drive has Fedora installed and the other has Windows XP.

I need to remove the hard drive from the system that has Fedora installed on it.

The problem is, when I do this, I cannot get the hard drive that has Windows XP on it to boot up. GRUB is still on it and is looking for the disk with Fedora on it.

How can I get the drive with Windows to boot up again. I have tried fixboot in the windows recovery console, but that didn't work.

If I remove the reference to Fedora in the grub.conf file, then will that work? I don't want to lock myself out of both operating systems.

Thanks for the help.

No use messing with grub in this case as you removed the drive where it's files are stored. The easiest thing to do is boot up with a Windows boot floppy and type: fdisk /mbr

It just seems that if I were to do that, then I would not be able to access my current windows install. What happened to the boot record for windows when I orginnally installed Fedora on my system?

The hard drive with GRUB is still installed. It is on the hard drive with windows. Or at least something refering to GRUB is.

When I start my system, all is says is GRUB.

When you setup linux and told it to use the MBR, that's where it put the boot record. If you want to revert back to a windows boot loader, you can use the command: fixdisk /mbr .

Your problem is happening because even though GRUB is installed on your MBR, it reads the boot file from your Fedora Core /boot partition or directory where the GRUB settings are stored. If anything happens to that hard drive e.g. removing it and GRUB can't read the /boot/grub.conf or /boot/grub/menu.lst then none of your OS's will boot.

OK, let me ask this. Is it possible to use GRUB to just boot Windows XP? If I remove the entry for Fedora in the grub.conf file?

I don't think you got what I meant. When you install grub on the mbr it reads the boot information from a /boot partition or directory. In this case the /boot partition is on your Fedora hard disk. If you have removed the drive which contains the boot information, grub cannot read your /boot/grub.conf or /boot/grub/menu.lst so it will just hang. Removing the Fedora entry and then removing the disk, won't help because grub needs to read the grub.conf (or menu.lst). As homey suggested, you may just have to use a windows boot disk and do "fdisk /mbr" so that grub is uninstalled from the mbr and Windows will boot.
