I don't know about using an image instead of an icon, but you can easily remove the icon all together.
Applications -> Configuration Editor -> Apps -> Nautilus -> desktop
Then on the right, you should have little check boxes for each icon. Uncheck trash.

He doesn't know. He wouldn't listen to what you said. He just ignored you. He needs to respond with some intelligent comment on how to do it. He only heard what he wanted to hear. Others want to know this too.
If he can't comment properly and give you the information you want, he should absolutely refrain from responding.
I don't know either and I want to know how. It is the only desktop icon you can't change by right clicking on it. It is a buf f'up on the part of the developers.

I know in KDE you can right click on the icon, click properties, click on the image on the left side of the general tab, select "other icons" and then hit browse to select your own image. I don't know if Gnome can do this, but I recommend switching to KDE because of how easily customizable it is.

Talking about that trash thing, how do you get it back under kde?
Probably by making a .desktop file. If somebody has it, I would like to have it cause I trashed my trashbox

There are two directories "files" and "info" which have the trash information. You can't just link to it, or it will make it very confusing to delete files permanently.
You need to create a link to
