RedHat 9 X Server font path error

RedHat 9 X Error font path !!!

Soyo K7V Dragon Plus
AMD XP1500+
Radeon 32MB All In Wonder 4X AGP Video card

I have other versions of Linux running on this computer without this problem > RedHat 8.0, Mandrake 9.1.

I've had RedHat 9 working before but had to start over after kernel compiling problems. I installed RH9, rebooted, went thru the "first boot" stuff, updated ONLY the kernel-athlon, kernel-source & doc rpms. I also installed the NTFS kernel update. Configured the desktop > KDE, font, icon sizes, colors etc as I always do. Shut down > mowed the lawn > came back in > rebooted > X won't start. Edited Grub to init 3 so I could look at files with Midnight Commander.

/var/log/Xfree86 log message: "could not init font path element unix/: 7100" & fatal server error > "could not open default font 'fixed'".

I've tried various suggestions I've come across but nothing has worked. I can boot into RedHat 8 & compare files between RH8 & RH9 & I do not find anything different.

Is this a problem with XFree86 4.3.0??? If so is there a way to install RH9 with 4.2.0?
Is this a port problem?

What am I missing here???

Help !!!!!!!!!

"could not init font path element unix/: 7100"
"Unix" here stands for the type of socket, 7100 for the port.
Xfs hasn't been installed/started/has been started but broke off startup due to errors. As root, start up Xfs w/o making it go to the background (no daemon), make it do verbose logging and watch the logs. "man xfs" for the details, and *maybe* there may be a problem with the initscript if it will try to rebuild the font dirs. Watch your logs.
