I am having a problem the graphical login with Red Hat 7.2. Although
I am in run level 5, I get the console login screen. I can log on just fine
from there. After logging in I type in gdm and it says that it is already running. If I type in kdm it will come up and I can choose wm from there.
If I type startx from the console gnome starts and runs fine.
I have tried reinstalling and setting default desktop to kde, but I still get
the console login. I also downloaded all updates from redhat and that
didnt work. Redhat 7.1 or Mandrake 8.1 doesnt do this but I would prefer
to use Redhat 7.2. My machine is dual booted with windows 2000 and
I am using the grub bootloader.
I tried pressing control+f7 before and after logging in but nothing happened. Thanks for the suggestion and i agree this shouldnt happen.
Strange problem.
Alt+f7 didnt work either, but I did find out something. After linux finished booting up my screen said ds login. ds is the name of my workgroup
in windows 2000. Somehow my linux setup is picking this up. Windows 2000 is installed on hda, with linux on hdb. It should say local host local domain after booting up but it isnt. I decided to stop activating network services at boot time to see if that cured the problem. Sure enough local host local domain cameup with the gdm screen. Of course then I couldnt get on the internet. So I went back and started network at boot again and got the ds login again, but I can get back on the internet. Any ideas?
