problems with slackware 9

during boot up slackware hangs for a while during this procedure;
-updating shared library links /sbin/ldconfig
then i get an error something to the effect of,
-cannot lstat opt/kde/lib,... something, something i didnt get the rest. Also, I use GNOME currently but was upgrading to Dropline GNOME, and it errored out during the install with a message to the same effect talking about that directory. Does anyone know what this procedure does during boot up, and can provide me with troubleshooting steps to solve it or do i have to reinstall. Ive had Slackware 9 on the same computer before with no problems. I did a full install, every package, and dont know what the KDE libraries have to do with anything. Should I reinstall or is there an easier way. Intermediate Linux user.

ldconfig examines the libraries in the given directories, /etc/ld.so.conf, /usr/lib, and /lib; update links and cache where necessary. Usually run in startup files or after the installation of new shared libraries.

lstat is a command that is trying to get file stats or status, etc.
You might be getting this error if the file its looking for doesn't exist or its looking for something not in your current $PATH.
