Problem playing movie-files as normal user

Hi all,

I have a problem playing movie-files using my regular user-account. I'm using totem but I have tried others as well with the same problem.

The error I receive is:
The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
(Details: serial 79 error_code 11 request_code 141 minor_code 19)

If I do the same as root everything works as expected.

Any hints?

Best regards,
Joakim

Yeah, sure...But on which file. It's not on the media-file, that's for sure. I've checked that one.

Best regards,
Joakim

Try setting the SUID bit. As root:
chmod a+s /path/to/totem (I think this might work...)
or
chmod 4711 /path/to/totem which should do the same thing.

Thanks, that was a good idea.

The result wasn't that good though:
argoyle@denethor:~/Data/Notes$ totem

(process:15550): Gtk-WARNING **: This process is currently running setuid or setgid.
This is not a supported use of GTK+. You must create a helper
program instead. For further details, see:

http://www.gtk.org/setuid.html

Best regards,
Joakim

Were you able to change the permissions for Totem? Did that work or didn't you try?
That whole GTK issue is interesting and good to keep in mind!

try editing /etc/group

then add your username to the audio, video and cdrom group

The GTK-issue came from setting the SUID-bit on the totem executable.

This is the output from the groups-command:
argoyle@denethor:~$ groups
argoyle mail dialout cdrom audio video staff games users

Do I need any other?

*cheer* It works again.

I upgraded my ATI-drivers from 3.9.0 to 3.11.1 and now it magically works. Must have been some problem there.

Thanks for the tips even though.

Best regards,
Joakim
