Play Video and Music

How do we play music and video on RHEL? I want to play video with .dat extension.
What are the extensions supported in Linux?

Install and use programs like gxine or mplayer. Linux supports just about any extension or file type, just have to install the proper codecs if necessary.

Search for video playing or video players and you will find many, many threads which answer your first question.

Regarding .dat files - that is generally the extension for the mpeg file contained on a VideoCD. You can either rename the file to .mpg, or simply click it and *nix should be able to figure out the file type.
