running firefox as root , might have something to do with this
you really
do NOT want to use the gui as root
and you really , really
do not want to run firefox as root
it looks like kde is crashing ,when starting firefox as
root
a question
How are you starting KDE as login ?
-- using the menu under the login
type in your non root user name
select KDE from the options
and type in the non root user password
hit enter
start firefox as a non root user

when logging in as another user in the kde environment, other than root, firefox doesn't freeze ???

then to test is ff is working as root ( a very bad idea , and not recommended )
--- as a normal user ---
Code:
su -
--- type in your root password when asked ---
firefox
also you might want to install the current ff
17 is two versions out of date
unless Oracle removed the "Auto update"
ff should auto install and auto update to 19.0.2
to check
launch FF as a normal user
click on "help" then "about firefox"
the version should be listed , and if it there is an update to install
if not and Oracle did disable the auto update
in ff
"edit" / then "preferences" then the " Advanced " tab
then in the " Advanced " tab select the "update" tab
and put a check in "automatically install updates "
restart firefox
