Nothing's wokring in Gentoo 1.4rc4! Help!

I just installed Gentoo 1.4rc4 and everything worked great during the install but now that I'm out first of all it keeps telling me that DEVFS isn't supported and that it needs to be, then my NIC doesn't work... and when I try running startx I get a message saying that it can't open my mouse device for input... Oh, and I hoped on into /usr/src/linux and ran make menuconfig and enabled DEVFS then ran "make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install" then "cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot" to copy the new bzImage over just like I did when installing but I still get the stupid message every time I boot... Oh, and as for the X problem, I've tried just about everything I can think of in xf86config

You need to recompile your kernel with /dev fs support and to mount it automaticallyon boot and to see that option under the filesystem tab you need to enable experimental sections under the code maturity tab, it is the first one. You need to make sure your boot is mounted, in gentoo they don't automatically mount it on boot
mount /dev/hdX? /boot
I need more info on your nic card and for x try running the program
xf86config
it ask you questions and writes the file for you.

I ran xf86config about 50 million times... ok so it was only about 10 times... anyhow, for some reason /dev/mouse isn't getting initialized... or something like that... oh, as for the nic its an SIS onboard nic... mobo is a pc chips... not sure which model... ran make menuconfig and enabled the only sis one in there... but appearently the procedure for recompiling the kernel is different then it was to do the initial compile??? thats what the make dep... blah blah.. line was... anyhow, I'm not at work right now so I can't mess around with the box to find out exactly what model of card it is... Grr... damn that RedHat... it makes everything so simple... Oh, and what's the deal with that, the cd used kudzu to detect and initialize hardware but it decided that the installed Gentoo didn't need it???
