no X as root... help..

Hello,

I did, at one point have this up and running.

I upgraded from SusE 7.2 to 7.3 and found my system unusable.. I have a Matrix G200.. (this is a know issue... of course I found out after I upgraded). I did the work around.. and got it up and running.. now the second issue with the upgrade is the truefont2.. or the lack of .. They give directions on how to fix this also. I did fallow the instructions to the `T`.. It worked but only for users.. not root.. which was fine with me because I'm hardly ever logged into xdm as root.

now comes the kicker..
I log out, and back in.. this time as root.. and all I get in a big red screen.. the kde splash thingy pops up and goes threw its run up thing.. but I don't get a menu bar, icons.. only a mouse pointer that I can move around. I Ctrl+Alt+BackSpace.. and log in as myself.. the kde starts up with no flaws. I try the process again.. same thing.

I have another Suse box. so I try to ssh in to it with the -X option.. I get in, and can bring up xclock.. su to root.. and then try to bring up xclock.. and get

Channel 2: istate 4 ! = open
Channel 2: ostate 4 ! = open
X Connection to dianne:10.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)

I was going to just reinstall.. but then I got thinking.. that's a windows thing.. so I would like to try to fix the problem instead of installing over it. I have tried for the past 2 weeks.. and I am no closer to a resolve.. though I have learned a lot about X11, and the start up.

Could anyone out their help... please

Hmm... sounds like some of root's kde config files are corrupt.

Try loging in as root at the command prompt and do startx. When it does whaever its not supposed to do... zap it (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace). The messages that X gives you while starting up should be useful in figuring out the problem. If not, paste it here, and we'll try figuring it out.

Reinstalling, of course, is never really necessary under GNU/Linux unless do something REALLY devastating. (like rm -fr / as root )

I suppose you can delete /root/.kde and see what happens

deleting .kde will work for one log in.. but then the problems returns.

I do think I have found the problem though.. I'm at work right now so I cant log in locally to verify.

It seems that if you enable Anit-Aliasing fonts in the /opt/kde2/bin/kcontrol This problem arises... I found this out because last night I selected that option with my login.. (the only one besides root.. which dose not work correctly in X right now...) Anyway I will post an update tonight to confirm / deny this...

wish me luck..

Well it dose semm if you enable Anit-Aliasing fonts in the /opt/kde2/bin/kcontrol This problem arises...

The system works fine now, though it did not fix the problem for root. but I can get a root gui as a user, so I dont really need to log in as root anyway.

Yes, i did remove the .kde & .kde2 folders.. but this only solved the problem tempararly. I could log on the system one time.. and get the kde to come up. But if I logged out and tried to log back in.. it gose threw the kde splash screen all the way.. but i nevert get anthing more than a default blue back ground..
