Hmm. Well, one thing is for sure, you're sharing the sound IRQ 10 with your ethernet connection. If you can adjust the IRQ settings to 'automatic allocation' in the BIOS without the system specifying them then it may help.
The trouble is that some systems allocate IRQs independently in a rather ad hoc kinda way, like 'oh look! there's another device, give that one umm.. IRQ 7' etc. If the BIOS autoconfigures them, they can be prioritised better.
If your system does not allow you to do this in the BIOS setup, don't worry about it.
You already have a driver installed and running sound services on your system.
You need a mixer to raise you system's master sound levels. Of course, check the BIOS setup tool for this functionality too.
Is there anything after this:
PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 00:11.0
emu10k1: EMU10K1 rev 7 model 0x8031 found, IO at 0x1420-0x143f, IRQ 10
ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: 0x8384:0x7609 (SigmaTel STAC9721/23)
I think the most important thing is to enable alsa at boot time and use a mixer to set the sound levels. Do you have a sound mixer program with Mandrake 8.1 ? (I'm sure you do).
If your BIOS doesn't allow you to allocate IRQs in the PCI section, don't worry about it.
To tell the truth, I don't know how to set up services at boot time in Mandrake. Look through your documentation and the documentation provided with the driver. Have another look at the alsa project page for installation instructions.
Also, as a thought, look for a Mandrake-specific binary (sorry I should have mentioned that this might be available earlier).
The OSS modules manage the sound driver, but I think you don't need them ...

So, erm ... waiting for someone else to butt in here.
Unfortunately, i haven't been getting the sound to work, and i'm really annoyed! No sound? *SIGH* This is what i'm gonna do. After next week i'll be on holiday and i'm gonna install another distro, either Debian Or Slackware. I hope it will then get my sound back. I'lve also heard that it's a pain to mess around with libraries and stuff like that on Mandrake.
If you want we can keep in contact, u guys use msn or what?
I guess I just used the term old as an expression. What I was refering to is loading a module as opposed to building it into the kernel.
Mandrake, I have yet to rebuild the kernel for my laptop, which is probably what it will take to make my floppy drive work. It worked fine with Redhat 7.2. Something to do with a conflict, due to Plug and Pray.
