Why use the alsa drivers when there is already a modules for the emu10k1???

Just compile the module, (be sure your kernel supports modules)
depending on the distro, add a line to rc.local (slackware) like
/sbin/modprobe emu10k1

chown :users /dev/dsp
chown :users /dev/mixer


and that is it.
Always worked for me... in slackware!
