Red face new kernel wont boot

When booting a new compiled kernel the boot stalls at the following message:
'Warning: unable to open an initial console'

why is this happening.
also, what files should be in the /boot directory apart from the bzImage -> compressed kernel.
does the System.map need to amtch the kernel or is it always the same and where should it be.
any other files needed i the /boot directory

thanks in advance

R

I am not really sure about this. But I remember I had such problems while trying to add support for devfs. I think there are some boot time options or something. See if you are using this and if yes make sure it is well configured.

hello,
did you include virtual terminal support under the charactor device settings? that would be my first guess.

for what belongs in /boot - i have vmlinuz, System.map and the kernels initrd.img file.
