mysql configuration problem in debian

I have downloaded binary package of mysql(zipped tar)and extracted in the foled usr/local

Linked that folder as /usr/local/mysql

But when i tried to run the mysal_install_db

and no log files were created in ./data directory

debian:/usr/local/mysql# ./scripts/mysql_install_db --user=mysql
Installing MySQL system tables...
ERROR: 1347 'mysql.db' is not BASE TABLE
080328 20:09:31 [ERROR] Aborting

080328 20:09:31 [Note] ./bin/mysqld: Shutdown complete

Installation of system tables failed!

Examine the logs in ./data for more information.
You can try to start the mysqld daemon with:
./bin/mysqld --skip-grant &
and use the command line tool
./bin/mysql to connect to the mysql
database and look at the grant tables:

shell> ./bin/mysql -u root mysql
mysql> show tables

Try 'mysqld --help' if you have problems with paths. Using --log
gives you a log in ./data that may be helpful.

The latest information about MySQL is available on the web at
http://www.mysql.com
Please consult the MySQL manual section: 'Problems running mysql_install_db',
and the manual section that describes problems on your OS.
Another information source is the MySQL email archive.
Please check all of the above before mailing us!
And if you do mail us, you MUST use the ./bin/mysqlbug script!

Just wondering...is there a reason to not use the
Debian binary? I've never had a problem with the
Debian package mysql-server. In addition, I know
that the Debian team is watching for security patches
and will make it easier to maintain the program.

It worked!

There was 2 mistaked done my me

first, I didn't copied the my.cnf to /etc

second I forget to specify the host parameter while trying to execute the mysql(client) command.

But the #mysql_install_db --user=mysql didn't worked
but #mysql_install_db worked ( without parameter --user)

Hi sunils1973,

may you specify how you solved the problem? What exactly do you mean by "specify the host parameter"?

I'm having the same problem and could not find any solution by now.

Thanks a lot

KK, its running. I just needed to set the correct chown and chrgrp options for the /usr/local/mysql and /usr/local/var directories.
