configuration problem of Linux Kernel on Debian

I'm a newbie out of newbies, so detailed input is appreciated.

I had to install "Linux Kernel" for ethernet setup. Installing Linux Kernel wasn't a big deal. However I was unable to configure Linux, which is a mandatory process, after installation. Upon executing "make config" or "make xconfig", I get the following code.

Code:
debian:/usr/src/linux# make config

Try installing the libc6-dev and libncurses5 packages. I think that it should work then. Also, are you sure you want to be running a make config. It will ask you about every kernel option avaliable. Much more efficient would be a make menuconfig and then to load your old configuration and tweak that.
