Thanks druuna for all the help. I take my hat off for all the help.

I wish I knew these aspects like you. So the rpm files doesn't need the 3 steps which
I use when installing from a 'tar.gz' file.

So I have installed the program successfully.

Why didn't it create a folder?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I installed the program using the following file. It was nearly 3 weeks ago.
gnupg-1.4.4.tar.gz

At the end of the installation, it created the follwing folder.
gnupg-1.4.4/
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why it didn't create a folder?
I just wrote 'kwatchgnupg' in the command line and pressed enter. The program starts. So it is working.

Hi,

That's one of the differences between packages and installing from source.

Rpm, deb (etc) packages are archives that contain files that are pre-compiled and ready to install (it more or less resembles a tar archive). There's no need for a temporary directory.

If you install from source you need a temporary directory to compile and make the program. After the last step (make install) you can delete this temp directory.

The above comments are 'in a nutshell'. The full details are in the links I provided in my previous post.

I have successfully installed the following programs. Is it fine to remove them? I mean there are so many things. I would like to remove them. It may not be a good idea.

If you think, it is fine to remove them, I could just use the 'rm' command to get rid of them. Please tell me.

gnupg-1.4.4.tar.gz

install_flash_player_7_linux-1.tar.gz

libassuan-0.6.10.tar.gz

libstdc++2.10-2.96-0.83mdk.i586.rpm

mozilla-i686-pc-linux-gnu-1.2.1.tar.gz

rarlinux-3.5.1.tar.gz

hexedit-1.2.12.src.tgz

Hi,

After installing a package you can remove the file it came in (be it tgz, deb, rpm etc). If you installed from source (compiled) you can also remove the temporary directory.
