I currently have an older box that is running Fedora 7 on it. It currently is a webserver, mail server, sql, & etc. I just configured a new box (more drive, ram, and speed) with Fedora 7 on it. Both have all the updates installed.
The question I have, is there an easy way to just move everything from one box to another so that the new box will function the same as the old one without copying the files, and reconfiguring all the settings step by step on the new box? I know that OS X on the Macintosh can do this, and they have a built in migration utility. I am sure there is a simple way (or at least not as time consuming as the other way) to do this.
Thank you for any suggestion/instructions.
Take care,
Ben
Well, you can manually configure it like the other server before making the switch but you probably will have to transfer over some data, like content for the website and database data, unless you really want to start all over again and do it manually, which would be rather silly.
Maybe I don't understand this. You want to move your settup from your old box to the new one, but you don't want to copy any files?
The solution is obvious. Just remove the drive from the old one and put it in the new one.
Moving setup configurations from one Linux to another is preposterously easy, but you have to move files to do it. I simply copy the hidden files from my home folders, along with the certain contents of /etc. I say certain, because much of the contents of /etc describe your different hardware. An fstab file describing how to mount your /dev/hda might leave your new /dev/sda in a kernel panic.
But such things as your /sysconfig/network, hosts and /samba/smb.conf might be real handy.
What I had meant was there an automated process for moving the data from one machine to the other. I can move the files myself, however, I was hoping there was a way for the server to do it on it's own. I was hoping to eliminate the possibility of me missing an imporant file.
I'm not aware of any. As far as I know you just copy the contents of the home directories, especially including the hidden files, and a select few of the /etc files.
