monitor out of range when shutting down x

Hi,

I have no problems when I'm in KDE but when I choose to shutdown the monitor shuts off and the system hangs stopping me from typing anything or seeing anything.

A quick rundown of my system: -

Asus A7V8X-MX MOBO
Hercules 9800SE AIW
MDK 10 Official
Monitors I've tried two, a Sony 100es 15" and a Dell (not sure of model at the moment) 17" - both with the same results.
The sound is on-board and linux is on a second HD win WINXP and a shared partition on the first.

This doesn't seem to be a problem if I boot into the console but if I start X and then shut it down then the monitor goes out of range again. I've been searching around for a solution to this but t's getting a bit desperate now as every time I go into MDK I can't shut down. I did manage to INIT3 from the terminal in MDK which then dumped me into the console without a problem from where I could shutdown/restart X. I also, on the advice of another thread, tried changing the lilo.conf to state

VGA = Normal

which has removed the graphics from the boot/console but hasn't solved my problem when X shuts down.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading

Nick

Well, just in case anyone has this problem it was down to the ATI drivers.

Got them installed and everything worked fine. So far so good anyway, I can now shutdown cleanly.

Thanks to all those who took the time to read my original post.
