Angry Modem Difficulties

I'm using a US robotics 56K ext Modem, and its not working properly. Well, actually, it dials out, and will authenticate and end with the following message:

Apr 22 19:59:19 localhost pppd[1189]: pppd 2.4.0 started by root, uid 0
Apr 22 19:59:19 localhost pppd[1189]: Using interface ppp0
Apr 22 19:59:19 localhost pppd[1189]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS0
Apr 22 19:59:44 localhost pppd[1189]: Hangup (SIGHUP)
Apr 22 19:59:44 localhost pppd[1189]: Modem hangup
Apr 22 19:59:44 localhost pppd[1189]: Connection terminated.
Apr 22 19:59:44 localhost pppd[1189]: Exit.

It says "waiting for ppp" in the bottom of the log window, and then cuts itself off. I've tried searching on here, but no avail

Can anyone help?

Are you sure you're getting authenticated? How are you dialing? kppp, wvdial, pppd demand? Check the man page & /usr/doc or /user/share/doc for the dialing method you're using. The documentation for most is fairly decent..

Try turning on logging for the dialup (see above), the log will go into /var/log somewhere I think.

Don't know if this applies to your problem, but I had a similar message when I used Mdk8 and it turned out to be kppp not being configured to use CHAP protocol - my ISP required it.
A quick reconfigure of kppp sorted it.
