Misconfigured hostname?

Hello, I'm having a problem - after I run ifup eth0 to bring my network up, X programs will no longer run. When I try to open e.g. sylpheed, I get the error:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0

If (after running ifup) I log out to kdm, and then log into fluxbox again, X programs once again work correctly.

Any suggestions on how to track down this problem?

Thanks

If you can post the details of your eth0 configuration that would help to trace the problem.

I reinstalled / and /usr, so the problem has "resolved". I tracked it down to the /etc/sysconfig/network file, however, which had my primary dns as hostname.
