Misconfigured X ??

Just installed Slack10 from an iso cd. On the surface, all seems okay, but there are subtle problems and I think it might be a problem with X. For instance, on any terminal, the '/' is missing from all the listings of directories, making them look like files. Also, none of the font colors match their settings even after I change them. Also, when I try to access emacs from a terminal, I'm told that I don't have privileges to do so, even as root. Also, whenever any windows open on the desktop, for instance under the K menu, they don't want to close.

I tried reinstalling Slack from the iso cd's and got the same result.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

If this is a problem with X, should it be removed and reinstalled from another source?

Thanks.

Well, when I first got Slack 10 installed, I ran:

$ cp /etc/profile ~/.bashrc

That set up the *term windows how I wanted and now I just run: xterm -rv for a console like appearance - you could try doing that and see if it helps :)

It is hard to imagine a proble with X causing your permission problems with emacs. Was this an official SLackware install CD? Did you check the md5s if you downloaded? Did you do a full install? Any modificiations after install, using an old user and home?

It's XFree.

I downloaded the iso from one of the linux distro sites, but I can't recall which one it was now without looking through them. The md5s checked out. And I loaded all parts relevant to X, and all parts that were recommended by default.

Would it be too messy to reintall X from another source?

I'd say you definately have some problems if you got a Slackware 10 CD that installed XFree instead of Xorg. I'd start off by getting a new ISO from one of the official mirrors. Then, do a full install. It's the easiest way to get things working right.

I agree with shilo. As of version 10, Slack is now using xorg. Where did you get this CD from? Regardless, I recommend going to either LQ ISO or LinuxISO for a fresh copy. Good luck with it, Slack is an excellent distro and you shoudn't be having these issues. -- J.W.

I downloaded a new iso of Slackware 10 and installed after reformatting. This seems to have fixed all the problems except the Konsole (terminal) performance under root. The "/" is still missing from the ends of directory names, which makes them look like files, and none of the colors match what they should be based upon the menu settings. In fact, their are plain white on black, and won't change.

Under a (non-root) User name though, the "/" is present in the directory names, and the colors are correct.

Does anyone have an idea how this could happen?

Thanks.
