minimizing windows causes them to disappear in GNOME 2.2.2

I'm running RedHat AS (2.4.21-27). The window manager is GNOME version 2.2.2 as far as I can tell. That is, gnome-session --version returns 2.2.2.

At the upperl right of each window, there are three icons: one to minimize, one to maximize, and one to close. If I click on the "minimize" icon, the window shrinks and disappears, with the animation showing that the window is going to the panel, but it then disappears. There is no visible change to the panel and nothing to click on to get the window back.

Some of my machines work fine. When a window is created, there is a corresponding icon on the panel, and when the window is minimized, it shrinks onto that panel icon. You can get the window back by clicking on the panel icon. On my buggy machine, when a window is created, there is no icon on the panel and so when the window is minimized, it simply disappears.

I can't figure out what's different from one machine to another. Any ideas of what to try?

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Right click your panel, go to add-->applet and see if taskbar is selected/deselected.

Thanks, that put me on the right track. The actual sequence of gestures that did it was:

right click on panel
choose Add to Panel
choose Utility
choose Window List

Thanks again.
