I bought an Abit KG7-Raid board with AMD XP 1400Mhz processor the other day, and I got problems.
When I install Linux, it seems to freeze up after the first install cd. So then I decided use that. After I reboot, everything scrolls by showing [OK]. But when I log in to any desktop environment, the whole system locks. By that, I mean not just X, but even the console.
I had the board and processor checked and they showed fine. And I have been told that this board is fully supported. So why would I have problems? Could it be my video card?
What I dont get is if there was some compatibility issue, wouldnt the boot up screen show a problem when it lists the services that are starting up?
I guess I should also poinjt out that Windows is having the same issue, and BeOS / QNX dont work right either.
If you have 3-4 OS's that are brain-faarting about the same problems, it's almost always a hardware issue. Troubleshooting is the only way you're gonna find out what's doing it. Try swapping parts if you can/have spares or older ones like cards. Freezes are also a very common problem associated to bad RAM. Try that first.
As with any Athlon heat is always a problem. Check your fans, heat sink, and the possibilty of adding a case fan as well. Also, if applicable check the fan on your video card.
