Login and loginout, please help

Hi,
I have read that you can login as root while loged in a regular user, I tried to type login on the terminal, and ask me to log in, I type root and ask me for a password, but then I get the error message of login incorrect, AM I doing it the right way? is that the coorect command to use?

Log in as a normal user.
Then type
su
you'll be asked for password, type root password.
Then you can check
whoami
it should be "root".

You might want to use "su -" instead of just "su" so that you inherit root's full environment.
