don't use partition magic. Mandrake 9 will do it all for you, includinog suggesting sizes etc.

We're assuming that you are installing on an empty hard drive.

If you're trying to set up a dual boot system and there is already an operating system controlling the entire hard drive, you will have to use something like Partition Magic to make room. Don't use it to make the Linux partitions, only to shrink the current one.

Ok I got that done and now while installing Red Hat it asked for the second cd, 5 minutes later it said that it was missing some kind of screen saver from the disk. I dont know why cause I installed from an ISO image but I saved the error (dump) in a floppy and I'm gonna try to redo the installation....

any ideas?

How critical is this screen saver? It can probably be added later.

Did the install work, other than that? Can you boot Linux? Can you still start XP?

I don't understand--the install program rebooted the computer? It didn't finish means it didn't load Red Hat? How far did it get?

When you boot XP, is it through the boot loader or just straight to Windows?

it got all the way to disk 2 and stopped because it had a bad package for some screensavers. i pushed ok and it went into a command system saying it was ok to reboot, i rebooted and came straight to windows

Okay, did you note the problem file? If so, do a custom install and don't try to install that file.

Also, you didn't asnwer the question about making room for Red Hat--just how did you do that?

So, we're dealing with about a 10 GB Windows partition and nothing else on the disk. The install is still giving you problems.

xscreensaver is probably important. It would appear to be the program that controls screen saving, instead of just one of the optional screen savers.

Did you check the CDs after burning them? Have they ever installed properly on another machine? I'm wondering if maybe you don't have a bad #2 disk.
