Linux on AMD?

Will Linux (RH8, for example) install on a system with an AMD CPU?

The install files are named ....-i386-..., which seems to me that they're designed for Intel processors. This is why I have this doubt.

Talking

Hehe yes, AMD chips are based on the Intel architecture. Some people think they do a better job at it than Intel do

i386 runs just fine on AMD, even i686 runs fine on Duron and Athlon chips. Actually Linux runs better on AMD Athlon XP chips than on Pentium4 (there are gcc compiler problems with p4's sse2 which just happens to be p4's main strength).

Yeah, my Athlon 1600 XP is classed as a i686 and is fine.
The processors must have almost the same instructions set and actions, else they wouldnt work the same in Windows.
