Linux DVD?

Has anyone managed to play a DVD in linux yet? I have compiled the latest xine-lib and xine-ui (0.51) but I now need a css plugin that WORKS to decrypt my DVDs! All I want to do is watch the movies that I HAVE PAID FOR! That is not illegal in my eyes. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've not had any luck compiling xine, i get billions of errors. I did get omi / oms working fine, anfd they play well. the thing i'm having HUGE troubles with is converting mpeg files to divx encoded avi files. The binaries and sources for mpeg2divx and avi2divx always fail to compile, despite using every single version of avifile existing!!!!

I got XINE working from an RPM back when I was running Mandrake, but since I upgraded to RedHat, I haven't bothered. Why? XINE sucks, especially when you don't like the default language settings, since changing them from a running instance of XINE (and no, you can't use the menu like you would with a physical DVD player or Doze software) causes it to crash. Since most of what I watch on DVD is anime (and english dubs, the default, are always VERY poorly done), XINE just doesn't cut it.

EDIT: Forgot to mention; Both InterVideo (of WinDVD fame) and CyberLink (of PowerDVD fame) have developed Linux versions of their popular DVD software, but it's currently only available to developers. If anybody wants to start a petition to make it available to people who already have computers, you can count on my support. *wants PowerDVD for Linux*

Speaking of DVDs, though, can anybody point me to a program that will rip part of a DVD (i.e, 1 episode of one of my anime DVDs) to mpeg? I'll eventually want to watch some of the stuff I have on DVD on a laptop, which won't have a DVD drive. I'd prefer a program that rips to MPEG so that I can watch it in Linux. AVI, even divx, is a last resort--On my PC, Doze causes any sort of video save for DVD itself to crash within the first 3 minutes, so I don't expect a laptop to be any better. I'd rather run pure Linux on the laptop, rather than dual-boot just to watch movies.

I'm also interested in a program that will let me rip part of the soundtrack out of a DVD. (Hey, I like the intro theme from Bakuretsu Hunters)

look for yngwie. I THINK it's pretty good, but i've not managed to get it working properly .. see above. I've no idea who this Yngwie person really was, but just searching for yngwie in google has lots of very strange links. I just can't get the x2divx package to rowk properly, which yngwie needs. if you have any luck with that.. let me know please!!!

No, That was mark knopfler, wally! :-)

Either way, it's only a very small gui which runs a bunch of other stuff in the right order.

anything else out there which can do the job..?

yngwie

I had to register just to tell you guys this.

Yngwie--- ie. Yngwie Malmsteen which is his full name
is one of the greatest guistarists in the world. he took inspiration from jimi hendrix and some classical violin player and added the classical elements to his guitar work becuase he wanted to play something that was actually good (unlike 99% of american mainstream music). he plays mostly metal music but is very classically influenced.

just a little now you know.
