Kernel Versions (very dumb but obvious question)

Why is there linux kernel 2.4, and then 2.6? Why isn't there a 2.5 kernel?

the odd numbered kernels are "experimental" and the even numbers are the release version. The 2.5 kernel was the development build for what would eventually become the 2.6 kernel.
