very dumb kernel question


real noob here, in kernel compiling, getting anxious already

hem... question is: do i need to download all the 2.6.10.tar.gz file or the patch only? i'm on the basuc 2.4 that comes with slack 10.1...

As far as I understand, the patch is only when you are working, let say, with the 2.6.9 and want to get upgraded to the 2.6.10.

If you are more that one hoop away, either you upgrade your kernel incrementally (example, from 2.6.7, then .8, and so on) or you get the hole thing.

Am I making any sense in here? I sure hope so

In your case, as jtshaw said, you want download the whole thing.

in the second CD of slack there exists a directory testing, then kernels and then 2.6.something.

thank you i got the whole thing. followed instructinos in the sticky but destroyed my install. oh well.

i'mm be reinstalling and retrying with another good and complete tutorial on this.
