so I'm guessing the kernels on the floppy?

if its on the floppy then you'll have to be careful to select the minimal possible options at compile time, as size matters a lot

but you should be able to replace any kernel with a different kernel without to much trouble

The more pressing issues is that you'll need to install the modules somehow. If you don't already have the kernel you might want to boot into a Knoppix, download the source of the kernel you want to build, build it, and install it by manually mounting your hard drive. If you're using LILO you'll need to somehow update it, which I am not experienced in. If you're using grub you're ok.

Can you not even boot into run level 1? Usually that'll boot.

realjustin: you can chroot onto the hard disk and run lilo, or any other programs that currently installed on it
