kernel patching ?

Say I wanted to patch the 2.4.20 kernel with

patch-2.4.21-pre5-ac3.gz

Do I need to have a 2.4.21 pre5 kernel?? Or can I apply it directly to a brand new 2.4.20?? One thing I think I do understand is I cannot use that patch with a 2.4.21-pre5-ac2, I would have to back out the ac2 first. But what about the pre5?? I am thinking that I do need a 2.4.21-pre5 to do it since the ac patches are so small.

thanks

help patching

I tried to patch the 2.4.20 kernel with the 2.4.21 pre7..it wouldnt compile...then I came across the fix right here What I did was copy the info from the web page into a text file. Called it ac97fix. Then I went into the 2.4.21-pre7 directory (is patched and broken), ran

patch -p1 --dry-run < ac97fix

I got this error

patching file include/linux/ac97_codec.h
patch: **** malformed patch at line 8: int dev_mixer;

hope someone can help, thanks

Keep questions with the existing thread you start them in please, its like double posting when you separate them which can cause confusion when we don't need the same discussion in different areas.

Thanks. As you can see, I've merged your threads together.

these are two completely separate questions.

1. Just a general question on patching.

2. problem with a patch.

Like I said before, existing problems or let me rephrase it, similiar questions should exist with the original thread. These are two separate questions but along the same lines of the same problem. We don't necessarily need two separate threads started by the same member discussing the general same topic in which both of these could have been asked in the same thread. Thanks.
