kernel-2.6.10 booting error

dear folks,

i have spend lot of time reading kernel upgradations and migrations.
i was trying to migrate kernel-2.4.20-8 to kernel-2.6.10

i am using redhat 9
i am using grub
when i am try to boot from 2.6.10 kernel
it gives me this error
[
RAMDISK: compressed image found at block 0
RAMDISK: incomplete write (-28 !=32768)
VFS: cannot open root device "LABEL=/" or unknown-block (0,0)
please append a correct " root =" boot option
kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount roofs on unknown block (0,0)
]
i dont think the problem is with my grub
coz when i boot from my orignal kernel-2.4.20-8
it boots properly

i was a bit frustated
i have checked evrey thing but cant make out what id the problem.
please if any one can help me just guide me.
and please mail me : ms_dream@rediffmail.com
thanks in advance.

Did you create a new ramdisk for the 2.6 kernel? Does your grub.conf/menu.lst point to it? Did you compile ext2 support into the kernel (I think ramdisks are usually using this filesystem)? AFAIK the package to create the ramdisk (mkinitrd in SuSE) has to be updated when you migrate from 2.4 to 2.6.
