KDE gui and RH8

How do you change users in the kde gui without losing the modem connection, and having to dial out again when you log in as a different user?

Also when i dial out i lose the icons off the desktop as i beleive i am given a virtual root desktop when the connection is initiated, how do i make the permissions of the desk top so i keep my icons, as when the modem is disconnected my original icons come back( ie my original desktop) happens to all users except root)

Any help would be very much appreciated
