Use Win4Lin in place of Wine? I know that Win4Lin costs but it really does work great for Windows 9X and ME. I even run IE 5.5 under my Windows 95 to surf http://localhost and it all looks as if I am surfing the web on a Win95 machine.

Win4Lin can't handle shockwave or flash. Its actually pretty crappy software. Causes screen flickers and gibberish on anything that wants to use the graphics card directly..

Except it isn't, as the source of Cedega/WineX is available for free to anyone, and compiles perfectly (I use it to play Deus Ex).

And to repeat the fact one more time, there is no Shockwave plugin for Linux. At all. Flash yes, and it's pretty good too, but no shockwave. Thus no iSketch for me.

Another reason you may want to use IE under linux is if you're a web developer. IE's CSS rendering is seriously borked up, so you have to make sure your site will work with it (unfortunately).

IE under Win4Lin handles flash (swf files) just fine. You just have to have the necessary module installed. That might mean that you have to be able to download the module to disk and install it manually (as I had to do). Given that Macromedia practices the extremely irritating practice of only offering automatic install via web connection, I had to dig a little to find something that worked. The best I could get was a module for Flash version 6. You can find all the modules at http://www.macromedia.com/support/fl...oldplayers.htm

I also got flash to work in Konqueror and Mozilla, via the Flash 7 Linux plugin that proudclod mentioned. Regarding shockwave, how and why is it different? Maybe there is a module for it also that can be installed under IE and Win4Lin. I'd like to see that iSketch file...

I have never experienced this. The program either runs correctly (which is most of the time) or it doesn't run at all (in which case I use DOSBox or native Linux). The version that I am using is Win4Lin 5.0. Win4Lin is not totally perfect given that PharLap's DOS extender can detect Linux, however it is an excellent simulation of a generic "PC" that Windows then "installs" on. Then again, Win4Lin wasn't meant to run all Windows versions, just 9X and ME. Maybe VMWare in place of Win4Lin might work.

Something else you can try: Bochs. It's like VM-Ware, and you actually run Windows under Linux using Bochs, or you can run Linux under Windows. Haven't tried it yet though.

Also, I know, yes, WINe is buggy. Just because it aughta work don't mean it will, and this is especially true if you use Windows.

I will reinterate: stuff for Linux can be elusive at best, but it is nevertheless out there somewhere. Just don't give up hunting.

Maybe win4lin just doesnt like suse linux then. Can install it on any of 3 computers and will get nothing but flickery, jumpy graphics from shockwave and flash plugin items.

If IE is crashing when you load up Tools, either:

- Post the output from wine on the terminal here so we can take a look at it

or

- set the proxy settings directly in the registry using regedit. You can google to find out the keys.

"wine regedit" to access the registry.

Does your linux find your computer hardware palatable? I installed the Mandrake 9.0 that I use on a Cyrix CPU based system. The installation and overall behavior appeared just fine. However, when running a test of the system with mprime, that program complained and kept printing error messages. With the AMD system that I use, mprime runs fine for as long as I want (weeks or more) with no problem. You can get mprime at http://www.mersenne.org

I would try Mozilla. I'm not sure how to access the Control Panel (obviously needed to access the IE Tools in all setups I've seen) if that is at all possible. Mozilla's got its own tools configuration built into itself. That's what I use under Windows too.

Well, tried every incarnation of mozilla there is. They all fail to run properly in wine. Freezing or not loading at all.

Decided to give win4lin another go and, big suprise here as it seems I've been through this before, no kernel available for suse 9.1 or 9.2.

Gee, i'm thrilled with win4lin already!...
/me goes to see if he has any luck with making vmware function on a relatively decent speed.

Having seen more of your problem, you definitely want to use at least win4lin 5.0 if you use win4lin. The following page might be of help in finding or building the necessary kernel for win4lin: http://www.netraverse.com/member/dow...l_download.php

You might have to manually build the kernel using the supplied patch file. But, that just seems weird, considering that they already have win4lin enabled kernels for Mandrake 9.2. I would inquire at their support. They may have the kernels but have not listed them.

The installer itself says no kernel available... Oh well. I "borrowed" the key just to see if win4lin had changed and would work better, and was going to buy myself a copy if it indeed ran smoothly, so I'm not out anything on that venture. And I really don't like the idea of having to build my own kernel to work with someone elses product so...
Soon as I can locate my windows 98 cd... o.O I'll try bochs or vmware or something and see if I can get any speed out of any of those when I'm not using a resource hog like 2000 or XP.
