Angry Installation Troubleshooting

Hi there boyz & girlz in the wonderful world of that which is known now as "Linux Land"

I am a Linux Newbie, I have never used it before but I have brought the new Mandrake Linux 8.2 as I was told by a friend that it is brillant and is more reliable than "other operating systems".

BUT I have a major problem, everytime I try to install Linux I keep on getting the same message of:

"Second Stage Started
Second Stage Exited Abnormally :-(
Sending KILL Signal
Blah Blah Blah
It is now safe to reboot your machine"

Has anyone got an idea of why this is happening to little old me?

I have tried looking for answers on MandrakeExpert but no luck at all, and when I try to post this question it comes up with the usual "you have no credits please purchase some @ 35USD A Piece".

My system is a:

PCChips M841LR Socket A Motherboard
AMD Duron 1Ghz Processor
256Mb SDRAM
SiS 740 On-board Graphics Card
C-Media AC97 On-board Sound Card
ESS PCI Modem.

Any help will glady be recieved.

Cheers All,
Dave.

Hiya Jens,

Sorry I don't know what dual boot is, but it sounds interesting.

I haven't partitioned the Hard-Drive Manually as I was told the installation would do this for me and secondly I haven't got a clue how to do it even if I wanted too.

I used the installation CD 1 (the boot up one) to start the Installation process and also have tried the F1 feature (which I think is the install program you were talking about) but still no luck.

I got in contact with the store manager today and he recommended using the F1 feature and typing in "Linux NoAuto NoBIOSPnP No Pentium" but I still have the same message come up.

I thought maybe it was a dodgey copy of Mandrake Linux 8.2 which I had purchased but was mistaken as I it installed to my brothers machine with no worries wot so eva.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Dave.

What are you systems stats, cpu, memory etc... Can your system really handle the Mandrake 8.2? I have found that when a stage 2 exits abnormally it can be a resource problem, let us know what your system hardware consists of.

HTH
Mike.

I know where you are comin from

I got a P41 firedragon and popped in the old Mandrake CD and it did not like it at all.

That's ok though it gave me an excuse to download RedHat 7.3

The thing I would try is to create a boot floppy from the images on the cd

try them and see if maybe one of them works.
