Thanks for the link. I went there, and it suggested installing all the plugins for vlc. So, I did this, but still no luck.
I just tried gxine, and got the following result:

When I try an avi file, the sound works, but the video does not. I get the following:
Code:
mark@debian:~$ vlc
VLC media player 0.8.6h Janus
[00000301] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `XVID'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
[00000343] jack audio output error: failed to connect to JACK server
I recently reinstalled w32codecs, after discovering that it had been moved to non-free in the multimedia repository. This still hasn't solved stuff, though.
Here's what I get with mplayer:
Code:
mark@debian:~$ mplayer movie.avi

Perhaps if I reboot, then the installation of w32codecs can better take effect.

Well, rebooting did not change anything. I'm stumped.
[later ...]
Tried kaffeine, and it also doesn't work. Here's the result:
Code:
mark@debian:~$ kaffeine: relocation error: /usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.23/xineplug_ao_out_alsa.so: symbol snd_pcm_hw_params_set_rate_near, version ALSA_0.9.0rc4 not defined in file libasound.so.2 with link time reference
Same error that mplayer gave. I found a bug report of this relocation error for xine right here. It apparently was fixed. However, I use backports; so, maybe an upgrade from there caused xine (and mplayer) to crack (libasound2 is from backports, for instance.)

There was an upgrade from backports, and included in that upgrade was libasound2:
Code:
Registering documents with scrollkeeper...
Setting up libasound2 (1.0.22-2~bpo50+2) ...
So, now mplayer and kaffeine (and presumably other xine dependent programs) display videos. vlc still doesn't work, however. But, I can now play videos.
