What methods, files or sysconfig information I need to collect before I restore a linux server and rebuild a replica? Can someone provide all the details in a few short sentences? ..Thanks ZH

No, we can't, and no one can. How would anyone know how your server is configured, with what services, to be able to tell you what you need???

Short answer is you need to back EVERYTHING up. What 'methods' also vary...are you backing up to tape, disk, USB drive, what?? You can use tar, rsync, bacula, amanda, or any of the MANY backup options you have. If you are talking about a 'snapshot' of an existing system to clone it to another bare-bones box, look into mondoarchive, mkcdrec, or systemimager.

Identify what is running on that server first. From there, identify where the configs are for each service, and the associated data for that service (mail, web, LDAP, etc.), and back all THAT up also. Grab copies of your /etc/passwd and /etc/groups files too, and the home directories for all of your users. If you're going to attempt a system wipe/rebuild on a new OS, the safest way to do this is to buy a new hard drive for your system. Remove your existing hard disk, and put it into an external USB enclosure. Do your new system build on the bare, new disk, then you can plug the old drive in and mount it (and mount it READ ONLY), and copy your data off, making notes while you do it, so you know what goes where, and WHY.
