How to become an X configuration expert

Hi all!
I want to increase my skills in tweaking and optimizing X. I am playing around with a sort of embedded platform, based on Debian, where I do not have access to any graphical configuration tools. One thing out of many that I want to learn more of is to enable hardware acceleration that my Java Swing application that will be running on the platform can utilize.

Is there any good literature out there that can help me with this? ...or some great site?
Please don't tell me to read the man pages or visit x.org. I do that all the time. I am looking for something that packages and presents the information neatly, without just being an introduction.

Thanks!
Fredrik Israelsson
