How do I run a jailed environment in Slackware?

I would like to know how to run a jailed environment in Slackware 9.1. In other words, I'd like to create directories for users so that when they SSH/Telnet/FTP in, they won't be able cd out of their home directory (allowing access to / ). I've heard that FreeBSD is the only *nix system that offers true jailed environments. However, I've also heard you can use the chroot command to do jailing.

I've never used chroot, or FreeBSD, so could someone explain?

Thanks!

BTW: I know there are a couple other posts on this site that are somewhat related, but they weren't quite what I wanted.

I'm not sure what is meant by the phrase "true jailed environments", but as for chroot...

If you're only concerned about FTP, you don't need to mess with chroot. Most of the better FTP clients (vsftp as one example) have an option to have the user in a chroot jail. The program takes care of all the messy stuff.

I just discovered I'm not going to be as much help as I thought. I experimented with setting up a user with "/usr/bin/chroot /home/jaild" as his startup program (instead of the usual "/bin/bash", and it came back saying this user was unauthorized to run chroot.

There IS a way to have a telnetted/ssh'd user in a chroot jail, but the simple way doesn't work, and I'm afraid I'm not interested enough in the question to go dig out how you DO do it.

Hope the FTP stuff was some help. Good luck,

CHL
