how do I run a different desktop environment

Right now I am using kde as my desktop, but would like to try out other desktops as well.

I find just typing "startkde", or "gnome-session", or "fluxbox" does work, I presume it is because I haven't started X yet.

Is there any way to say "startx but use fluxbox or gnome this time"? I am using slackware9.1, and have installed fluxbox from the slackware9.1 patches directory. Gnome was installed of the cd durring the installation.
