use crtl_alt_+ or ctrl_alt_- keys to change it if x is already setup to use more than one mode.

use the + and - on the numer pad

well surely that's the wrong answer... that's INSIDE X, not outside...
change the framebuffer mode in your lilo or grub configuration file:

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Framebuffer-HOWTO-5.html

half way down....

The lilo.config is the permanent solution, "fbset" allows you to change it on the fly. You can also compile better looking "puny" fonts into the kernel which can make the higher resolution modes tolerable. The Framebuffer-Howto is well worth reading.

Dave, I think thats in the kernel. Maybe there is something in the kernel source that you could change and recompile.

Hhhmm now you got me thinking.

Yep, it's in the kernel.

On my rescue disk set I am building I have just put the kernel on the first floppy, no boot loader or anything, just a kernel.

My / is on the second floppy.

I know redhat has replaced the penguin in their kernel to be a banner that says RedHat or something.

While the penguin is cool, I would like to add a banner to mine.

i have changed mine to my company logo. you need a gimp plug-in called glogo. there is a few instructions. its quite easy its a bit time consuming and MAKE SURE you back up the old file and also MAKE SURE you use the format of the orginal file. you'll know what i am talking about.

Yea, I just got done making a set of rescue disks, I built on the leka rescue floppy. But I needed support for pcmicia cards so built a kernel with most common pci/isa nics and pcmcia support, and common filesystem support. I had to put the rootfs on a separaite disk cause the kernel was to big. But they work great for my needs. Since I used the initrd.gz from the leka rescue disk, it has links web-browser ,and TinyIRC, and all the other programs they have on the original. I removed the modules form the original, cause everything was built in.

Maybe I'll rebuild the kernel with a custum logo, that would be cool. The frambuffer-howto says there is a plugin for gimp to make the images, I guess I'll read up on that.

right, I noticed the redhat one in different screen sizes would be off center.

Thanks for the info, I'm gonna check on doing it soon.
