Hibernate&Suspend questions

So I've never used either hibernate or suspend and have been reading up on it as I am upgrading all my stuff and wanna try either/both but have some questions first

I understand that hibernate is mostly for desktop pc's and writes the save to disk and shutsdown
and suspend is more for lappy's and holds the save in ram
is that right?

1) how do you get out of hibernate/suspend?
just use the power button?

2) can either one "harm" my pc in any way?
I have many distros and install a few all the time
so I always have to change /etc/fstab settings for swap
as some distros format it no matter what(older stuff, etc)

thx

Fool's guide:
cat /sys/power/state to see what your box is capable of. Some of

standby - basically 'turn off' but remail comsuming 99% or the power
mem - suspend to ram = go asleep and save more power
disk - hibernate to disk write up a swap file and turn off

for hibernate, add resume=/your/swap/device in the kernel and on the boot line. Try your luck as follows (disk dhown)

sync; echo -n disk > /sys/power/state
