Good morning everyone. I decided, after a pretty bad upgrade from FC5 to FC6 to just do a clean install of FC6 and wipe everything out. I was working in KDE desktop last night and everything appeared fine. I downloaded the hundreds of updates. Today, I decided to check out GNOME. Well, as you would expect, there are some bugs.
First of all, when I click on X-Terminal under root, the terminal comes up, and stays stuck in the upper right hand corner of the screen. There are no minimize, maximize or close buttons in the upper right hand side of any window I open. I figure this has to be a system setting, but don't know where to go to change this. I need the min/max/close buttons.
The windows will not allow me to drag them across the screen either, they just stay stuck in one place...so what do I do to change this?
If I click on the desktop icon in the lower left portion of the screen, a fatal message comes up and says "You window manager does not support eh show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager." Either I don't have this installed correctly, or the FC6 or the upgrades, did something. How do I get a window manager to work? I think these problems must be related. Is it just a matter of finding some config file and changing something, or do I have a bad install of the GNOME desktop? Or do I merely have to download some update to get it to work right?
I would appreciate some help! This FC6 version is amazing, but it is also buggy. I love the improved graphics, but I hate these bugs!

It sounds like the Metacity window manager is not running. Metacity takes care of giving your windows title bars and borders.
Try moving the following directories to a temporary location (or remove them), and then restart Gnome. They are all in your home directory: .gnome, .gnome2, .gnome2-private, .metacity.
Possibly what has happened is that by upgrading from FC5 to FC6, your Gnome settings are incompatible with the newer version of Gnome. By allowing these folders to be recreated, the settings will be reset to the default.
Ian: Thank you for the suggestion. However, there are two separate things I have done. I originally upgraded to FC6 from FC5 and things were working great until Saturday when I was fooling with some icon settings and lost my entire GNOME desktop. I couldn't figure out what to do, so I went back and just clean installed FC6, wiping out my prior installation. I figured, oh well...having GNOME under FC6 is better than no GNOME
at all...no big deal, except that I lost a lot of work I put into installing some packages. Upon wiping the disk clean and clean installing
FC6, I have encountered the GNOME desktop problems, including Metacity not working when the desktop comes up. So this problem is NOT attributable
to FC5 or any upgrade to FC6. This problem is only inherent in FC6. I have also encountered another problem which seems to be ancient (I have found some things on the net which are ancient) relating to XML problems with Perl. These problems did not exist in FC5, so I think there are some real bugs with FC6 that need fixing. Do you have any suggestions on how to solve the GNOME Metacity problem now that you have a clearer
picture of what I have done?
