Question Freeze-up during recovery mode

I am trying to run boot up in recovery mode in Lucid Lynx 10.04 on a Dell XPS M170. When it gets to [1107.134155][drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: GPU lockup-switching to software fbcom, it stops and freezes up and will go no further.

What does this mean and is there a fix?

Try adding the "nomodeset vesa" boot argument and see if that makes it boot. If that works OK for you then blacklist some drivers and continue to run VESA or install NVidia drivers. Couldn't find an example thread here so for details see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1467074.
