How do I get into Recovery mode without rebooting?

I'm running Kubuntu 7.10. I need to get into Recovery Mode, but hitting ESC when I see Grub doesn't seem to work. Is there another way to get there? Thanks.

When you see the grub menu, or the grub prompt ???.
You should be able to use the install CD I'd think - else chroot into your disk install from a liveCD.

Do you mean single user mode? When you see the grub screen with the kernel about to be booted highlighted press e, down arrow once, press e again move the cursor to the end of that line type a space followed by 1 then press enter and b
That should start the computer in single user text login mode without X.

When you hit esc what do you see?
There should be a recovery mode there, it is the second line in your menu.
