Fedora 10 console numbers changed?

I've noticed that Fedora now uses console 1 (Ctrl-Alt-F1) for the GUI, and 2-6 for CLI? 7-10 just produce blank screens.

I'm periodically experiencing GUI freezes, which appear to require a reboot. These are complete freezes, save moving the mouse around. I am unable to switch consoles or Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart X either.

However, I know I still have processes running that I started in virtual consoles, due to hard drive activity.

Any ideas how I may be able to recover from these freezes without restart?

I also am having problems with Fedora 10.

I've never been able to get to a console once X starts. I've tried with GDM and KDM.

I've also had occasional freezes.

Attempted to clear these with:
Fedora 10 i686
Fedora 10 x86_64
Fedora 10 Live CDs

Fortunately I've enough drive space to keep my old installation (Fedora 7) and booted into that once I found the problems with 10.
