ReiserFS is fast for small files but for big files and high I/O throughput use XFS. XFS uses the memory to cache and buffer to reach high I/O throughput. It is possible to reach 60 megabytes per second with a hard drive when hdparm only benchmarks it at 35 to 40 megabytes per second.
Benchmarks at namesys site are a little skeptical. Reiser4 is still experimental, so I do not suggest using it for server. Using it for a desktop is ok, but schedule backups just in case something happens even though you should have schedule backups on a weekly or monthy basis.
IMHO, ReiserFS is not fast for writing files. To improve its speed for video capture, I had to use sync and notail to minimize or prevent frame drops. For XFS, it seems to be a lot better for constant writing for long periods. Also XFS proved its speed during writing and reading through SMB. It always peaks at 10 megabytes per second on a 100 megabit network. With ReiserFS it peaks at 6 megabytes per second.
