what is the fastest file system for scsi hard drive?

i use reiser but the performance seem not so good

if someboy have some (not old) benchmark about ext3, reiser3, reiser4, xfs jfs... that could be cool

thanks

Reiser is usually considered as the fastest all round... If you search for benchmarks you should finds some as I know that various studies on the speed have been done...

I use ext3 tho for reasons other than speed...

ReiserFS is fast for small files but for big files and high I/O throughput use XFS. XFS uses the memory to cache and buffer to reach high I/O throughput. It is possible to reach 60 megabytes per second with a hard drive when hdparm only benchmarks it at 35 to 40 megabytes per second.

Benchmarks at namesys site are a little skeptical. Reiser4 is still experimental, so I do not suggest using it for server. Using it for a desktop is ok, but schedule backups just in case something happens even though you should have schedule backups on a weekly or monthy basis.

IMHO, ReiserFS is not fast for writing files. To improve its speed for video capture, I had to use sync and notail to minimize or prevent frame drops. For XFS, it seems to be a lot better for constant writing for long periods. Also XFS proved its speed during writing and reading through SMB. It always peaks at 10 megabytes per second on a 100 megabit network. With ReiserFS it peaks at 6 megabytes per second.
